What’s Up with Gifted and Talented Education in Texas???

Did you know that only $188.00 is allotted yearly to each identified gifted and talented student? Mrs. Shapiro, one of our state representatives from Plano, spoke at the Thursday night dinner at the Annual TAGT Leadership Conference, March 31-April 1. Thirty billion dollars are spent on education each year in Texas! House Bill 1394 only allows 6 million out of the 30 billion to go to talented and gifted education! She went on to say that “2.5 out of 4 kindergarten children who start school in Texas actually graduate”. Rewarding and training high quality teachers is important to Representative Shapiro. The Davidson Institute rated Texas the best in the country for identifying gifted and talented students. However, Texas is weakest in servicing the gifted and talented in our state. Why? We must have teacher training accountability. The state mandates that every teacher who has a gifted child in the classroom must complete the required 30-hour gifted and talented training and complete the yearly 6-hour update. We need incentive programs for those districts, which will be accountable, according to Representative Shapiro. She appropriately quoted Sir Winston Churchill, “Sometimes to do your best is not good enough. You must do what is right.” Representative Shapio encouraged everyone to contact their state representative and support dedicated funding for Gifted and Talented Education in Texas!

MALLETT & COMPANY attended two very informative sessions at the Leadership Conference: Over excitabilities and Emotional Intensity presented by Dr. Debra Troxclair; and, Differentiation Using the 5-Star Model by Dr. Joyce Juntune. Both sessions were on the cutting edge for educators.
Dr. Juntune’s passion for differentiation for the gifted students was expressed in her model. Her techniques for illustrating the differences between gifted and the non-gifted in the classroom were superb. She said that the “depth and complexity” is where the difference occurs. She emphasized that educators must give students CHOICES. Most importantly, teachers must know what their students’ interests are. Thank you, Joyce!
Dr. Troxclair was informative, humorous, and innovative as she told about the characteristics of the gifted and talented learner. She used K. Dabrowski’s Theory of Overexcitabilities. Dabrowski states: Intense + Sensitive = Gifted. Dr. Troxclair’s presentation was like a breath of fresh air!!! Thank you, Debra!
