NewsletterFUNDING for Gifted and Talented Education! |
The Congress is in session on Monday,
July 11th. The subcommittee on Labor/HHS/Education appropriations will
develop the fiscal year 2006 appropriations bill on Tuesday, July 12th.
This group of Senators will decide whether to include $12 million for
the Jacob Javits Gifted & Talented Students Education Act in the bill.
If they do include the funding, there is a good chance that the Senate
will pass a bill that includes funds for Javits. Receiving the funding
from the Senate means that the House and Senate will have to confer on
this program. This means that gifted education will benefit with the money
from the Javits grants, as will the National Research Center on the Gifted
and Talented in 2006. A Remarkable Story:A young immigrant boy who came to the United States from Puerto Rico sat in amazement and wonderment, as he gazed at the birds that gathered outside his poor tenement dwelling in New York City. His journal and drawing books were the only items he truly cherished. Every day he recorded the movements of his fine-feathered friends. The boy noticed that some birds tended to tilt and bend their wing tips to insure ease of maneuverability while in flight. Unable to speak English, yet extremely proud of his drawings, he showed them to his teacher. The drawings revealed minute details of remarkable creatures in flight and perched in the nooks and crannies of the buildings. His teacher was so impressed with what she saw that she contacted a friend who knew one the finest aeronautical engineers in America. Upon seeing the boy’s drawings, the engineer marveled at the intricate details and the passion that unearthed these pictures. The drawings were passed on to a major airline. The airline eventually designed one of the finest jets, modeling it after the wing tips that were in the boy’s drawings. Needless to say, the boy and his family are no longer poor. Unable to speak English and in a low socio-economic environment his giftedness was discovered, thanks to a teacher who saw his potential and incredible talent. ATTENTION!!!
